With a relatively recent change to NS2, you no longer automatically pick up your primary weapon if you aren't looking at it. So for example, you go near the shotgun, you don't look at it directly with your crosshair, you assume the game will default to picking up the primary weapon...you end up picking up a welder and curse everything.

How it currently works:
You have to aim with your crosshair which weapon you want to pickup. If your crosshair is closest to the shotgun, you will pick it up, but you have to aim at it or closer to it than the welder (i believe that's how it's supposed to work) to make sure it happens. Might depend on what settings you have on, as the game can tell you on bottom of screen which weapon you will pickup if you drop your weapon.

I wanted to make sure that was communicated because people might think it feels random right now. Which it does feel random, when you aren't aiming at the weapons. It isn't random if you aim with your crosshair.

Seperate drop weapon and pickup weapon keybindings.

This is 90% of the problem you pick the wrong thing up when you just want to throw your gun.

Make use key the pickup key and keep the drop key as is. It's a horrible implementation right now.

I am really curious how this 'two-button setup' is going to stop your AUTO pickup from picking up the wrong thing.

If you don't have auto pickup enabled there shouldn't be an issue.

auto pickup is the only thing that makes sense with a two button setup
think of it the way it works in csgo and you'll see why
you'll basically have to throw away your gun looking in another direction and then move towards the gun you want to pickup and autopickup it (because there's a welder on the ground that might block you from picking up your weapon)
at least that's how i imagine it to be

But that's exactly how it is right now..? Am I missing something
Currently, if you throw your weapon on the ground and stand above it, there is a delay before auto pickup picks up your weapon.
If you add in a welder, as in drop a welder together with a weapon and run over it, you INSTANTLY (the keyword here is instantly) pick up the welder AND the weapon.
This means the welder is resetting the timer where you are unable to pick up your primary weapon off the ground that you dropped.
EDIT: This is the reason people pick up the rifle when they throw their rifle into the pile. The welder resets your primary weapon timer and since your rifle is closer to you than the shotgun you pick it up.

If the primary weapon that you drop on the ground did not reset with the welder, that would mean you could pick up the shotgun and the welder before the rifle's timer ended, but currently you can not because the welder resets your primary weapons timer.

I am still really lost as to how the 2 button setup is going to help any of this. If your problem is picking up the wrong gun from the pile you threw your gun in, that's your fault. If you don't have auto pickup enabled, look at the shotgun and press the pickup/drop key, if you are in pickup radius you pick it up 100% of the time and drop your rifle in the process.

If anything the two button setup is more clunky because now if you want to juggle you need to have auto pickup enabled, otherwise you have to spam two buttons in a loop. Or there is some quality of life that I am missing. Or people just want it because other games have it. Why not just make the game quake then.

Edit2: I think if you have your rifle out and you pick up a welder off the ground your weapon automatically switches to it (without auto pickup)? I'm not sure and if this is the case, then having two buttons will not change that either. I just do not see any reason other than "make it more beginner friendly" or "make the pickup system less clunky". Imo it will be a hindrance to people who realise how it currently works.
